Why Is My PDF Blurry? 5 Causes and Fixes
A PDF usually looks blurry for one of five reasons: it was scanned at low resolution, it was compressed too aggressively, it's an image being viewed at a zoom level higher than its native resolution, it uses a low-DPI print preset, or a viewer is applying its own smoothing. Only some of these are fixable after the fact — re-scanning or re-exporting at a higher resolution helps; a PDF that was already low-resolution when created can't be sharpened by a converter.
1. It was scanned at low resolution
The single most common cause. A page scanned at 72–96 DPI looks fine on a phone screen but turns visibly blurry once printed or zoomed in. There's no way to recover detail that was never captured — the fix is re-scanning at 300 DPI or higher.
2. It was compressed too aggressively
Strong PDF compression downsamples embedded images to shrink file size. If a PDF looks noticeably softer than the original, try re-compressing from the original source file using a higher-quality preset instead of the smallest-size option.
3. You're zoomed in past the image's native resolution
A scanned or photo-based PDF page is a fixed-resolution image. Zooming your PDF viewer past 100% doesn't add detail — it just enlarges the same pixels, which looks blurry. This isn't a flaw in the file; it's how raster images behave at any zoom level beyond their native size.
4. A low-DPI print or export preset was used
Some "Save as PDF" and "Print to PDF" presets default to 72–150 DPI for smaller files. If the source document (not a scan) still looks blurry, re-export it using a "high quality" or "press quality" preset instead of "screen" or "web" quality.
5. The viewer is smoothing or hardware-scaling the page
Occasionally the PDF itself is fine, and the blur is introduced by a viewer's rendering engine at certain zoom percentages. Try a different PDF viewer or zoom to exactly 100% to rule this out before concluding the file itself is the problem.
