GIF files: how to open and convert them
Animation workhorse of the web. A 256-colour palette per frame — fine for graphics and memes, visibly lossy for photographs.
What this site can do with GIF
- Open and read: yes
- Write and convert to: yes
- Compression: lossy — a quality slider applies when encoding
- Transparency: supported
- Animation: supported
Transparency is 1-bit (a pixel is opaque or fully transparent), unlike PNG's gradient alpha.
