Downloading an audio file is NOT guaranteed in every browser. The Web Speech API has no standard way to encode its own speech into a file, so this app can only record the playback by capturing system or tab audio — this depends on your browser and operating system, requires your permission, and is simply unavailable in many environments (including most mobile browsers). When capture is unavailable, playback still works with every voice, rate, pitch, and page control — only the download is disabled. The spoken voice is whatever your device provides, so the set of voices, languages, and whether pitch or word-level highlighting actually work varies per browser and per OS voice. This is best-effort, not a guarantee. This tool reads the PDF's text layer. Scanned or image-only pages have no text to speak — run OCR on those first.
How to use this tool
- Add the PDF you want to hear. this app extracts the selectable text locally — no upload and no cloud speech service.
- Choose what to read: the whole document, or a page range by number. Scanned pages with no text layer are reported with a warning instead of being silently skipped.
- Pick a voice and language from the voices already installed on your device, then set the reading speed between 0.5× and 2×. Adjust pitch only if your chosen voice supports it.
- Press Play and follow the highlighted text while it is spoken. Use Pause, Resume, Stop, and the page skip buttons to move around the document.
- If you want a file you can download, use the Record button — it captures the playback from your device's audio output where the browser supports it, and explains when it does not.
