Frequently asked questions

How is income tax calculated under the new regime?

The tool applies the FY 2025-26 new-regime slabs to the taxable income you enter: nil to ₹4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% in ₹4 lakh steps, plus 4% cess. For ₹15,00,000 the slab tax is ₹1,05,000, and tax payable is ₹1,09,200.

Why is the tax zero up to ₹12 lakh?

Section 87A gives a full rebate on tax for taxable income up to ₹12 lakh in this regime. Just above it, marginal relief caps the tax at the income above ₹12 lakh. At ₹12,30,000 the slab tax of ₹64,500 is capped at ₹30,000, and with cess the tax payable is ₹31,200.

Does it cover the old regime, deductions or capital gains?

No. It is illustrative and covers new-regime slabs for FY 2025-26 (assessment year 2026-27) only. The old regime, deductions, surcharge, special-rate income such as capital gains, and the Income Tax Department's own calculator are out of scope. It is not tax advice, so do not use it to file your return.

Should I enter my salary or my taxable income?

Enter taxable income. The tool applies the slabs directly to the number you type and does not subtract the standard deduction, allowances or other deductions for you. Work out your taxable income first, then enter it to see the illustrative tax.
