Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. Enter 25 as X and 200 as Y and the tool shows that 25% of 200 is 50. It works out the same result whether you think of it as 25 hundredths of 200 or one quarter of it.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
The change from X to Y is (Y minus X) divided by X, times 100. From 25 to 200 the change is plus 700%, because 200 is eight times 25. A negative result means a decrease. It treats X as the starting value and Y as the new one.
How do I find what percent one number is of another?
Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. With X as 25 and Y as 200, 25 is 12.5% of 200. The calculator shows all three identities at once, so you can read the one that matches your question: percent of, X as percent of Y, or the change.
Why does it show n/a or refuse to calculate?
Y cannot be zero, because nothing can be a percentage of zero, so the tool shows an error. If X is zero the percentage change would mean dividing by zero, so it shows n/a for that row. The tool does not read word problems; it applies three fixed formulas.
