How to use this tool

  1. Add photos taken against a plain, evenly coloured backdrop (a white wall, a studio sweep, a product table). Drag them onto the page or choose them; they stay on your device.
  2. Choose what replaces the background: full transparency (saved as PNG or WEBP) or a solid colour for passport-style photos.
  3. Set Edge firmness — soft keeps fine hair, hard removes halos — and watch the preview update as the slider moves.
  4. Press “Remove the background” and download the results, individually or as one ZIP.

About this tool

Cut the subject out of a photo and keep the transparency. Free and unlimited, and nothing is uploaded: it all runs in your own browser. Recognition runs entirely on your device — nothing is uploaded to any server, and the result is generated locally before downloading straight from your browser.

Privacy & limitations

This is solid-colour background removal, not AI subject detection. It flood-fills the backdrop colour inward from the image borders, so it works on product shots and plain walls but will not separate a person from a busy scene, a patterned backdrop, or a gradient. Where the subject touches the border in a colour close to the backdrop, parts of the subject can be removed too. Raise Edge firmness or crop the image first.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know what the subject is?

A neural network trained to find the salient object in a picture. It runs in this tab, downloaded once and cached, so the photograph is never uploaded anywhere.

What kind of photos work best?

A clear subject against a background it contrasts with. Busy scenes, several possible subjects, or a subject the same colour as what is behind it all make the edge less certain.

There is a faint halo around the edge. Can I fix it?

Raise the edge firmness, which trades a little softness for a harder boundary. Lower it when the subject has fine hair or fur, where the softness is what makes it look real.

Which format should I save as?

PNG or WEBP. JPG cannot store transparency, so a cutout saved as JPG comes back with a solid background.
